At his zenith, Harvey Whittemore was loud, bombastic, occasionally obnoxious. He had power, through his clients, and he wielded it in Carson City for them. And not very quietly. Combining a quicksilver intellect and a nonpareil work ethic, Whittemore became very wealthy, transformed himself into a developer and envisioned a bedroom community for Las Vegas called Coyote Springs. And then it all fell apart. The recession, the fracturing of his business relationships and then…the indictment and...
UPDATE: Chairman McDonald, responding to the missive I clearly identified as a draft with his name, put out a statement that indicated I said he sent this to the central committee. I did not say that, as any plain reading of my post would reveal. But he may have sent it if I hadn't mocked it -- we will never know. And it came straight from GOP HQ, where a mole made sure I'd see it. This is very sad, especially because the chairman knows this is the very pitch he has been making to voters in...
TONIGHT'S RALSTON REPORTS: State GOP chair hopeful Robert Uithoven. DAYS UNTIL FILING FOR OFFICE OPENS IN 2014: 157 DAYS UNTIL PRIMARY ELECTION DAY 2014: 256 DAYS UNTIL GENERAL ELECTION DAY 2014: 403       Good morning, everyone. As Robert Uithoven, who wants to be the next state GOP chairman, prepares for a TV blitz today (“The Agenda” and “Ralston Reports”), this is how the race is shaping up against favorite Michael McDonald: Uithoven has...
Good morning, everyone. I always smile when I wake up in themorning to find my picture in the “newspaper.” That gaming panel was enjoyable if not controversial. Five articulate, thoughtful, engaged people talking about major gaming issues. If you want to know why I continue to believe I have the best job in the world, I ask you: Where else in the world within 24 hours could you have a legislative leader celebrate low turnout among minorities and youngsters and a defeated congresswoman...
Former state Treasurer Bob Seale is mulling a bid for his former job and will meet with the governor next month, he said today. Seale told me Gov. Brian Sandoval had asked him to consider it. An accountant who was treasurer from 1995-1999 and subsequently was a one-term assemblyman, Seale has receded into private life and now works in an accounting firm with Las Vegas City Councilman Bob Beers. Seale had just retruned from a months-long trip across the country, including a visit to Civil War...
UPDATE: As a sign of the pressure he is facing, and in an attempt to hold onto his leadership post, Hickey just put out this statement about 4 PM:   "I am sorry about my recent comments and regret I made them. It was not my intention to alienate any anyone, but I did misspeak, plain and simple and for that I apologize.   I agree with Gov. Sandoval that Republicans must earn the trust and confidence of all Nevadans. I look forward to working with the Governor and my fellow Republicans in...
In the midst of the race for the Nevada Republican Party chairmanship, with the Establishment trying to oust incumbent Michael McDonald, some Tea Party types have posted one of the funniest and most embarrassing news releases I have ever read. I must emphasize: This is not a parody. In fact, you can see it here, and I have annotated below.     McDonald expected to win re-election with ease. (Oh, really!) Michael J. McDonald has the needed support to win his re-election bid but the party...
National Journal's Hotline this week posted a piece on Gov. Brian Sandoval, joining many others in using the sunny meme that has stuck since shortly after he was elected in 2010. The piece is about the goal, elicited by the Las Vegas Sun's Anjeanette Damon, of Gov. Sunny's re-election campaign to get 50 percent of the Hispanic vote next year. Sandoval, by running to the right of Gov. Jim Gibbons three years ago, was crushed by a 2-to-1 margin by Rory Reid among Latinos. He has since done a lot...
Las Vegas Sun Publisher Brian Greenspun cannot sue the parent company of the Review-Journal until a deal is signed between his siblings and Stephens Media, a judge ruled today. Greenspun's attorney, Joe Alioto, says he is preparing an appeal to the Ninth Circuit to prevent the RJ from dissolving a decades-old Joint Operating Agreement. The order from Judge James Mahan is below. UPDATED: Alioto also told me that he believes that the RJ's attorneys were responsible for Leif Reid's request to...
