WELCOME TO THE WEEKLY REPORT. This week: 1. Exclusive look at numbers in the race for the Assembly – where there are openings, and where there are not 2. Presidential campaigns in Nevada 3. My insiders on the solar flare and if it will be a campaign issue 4. Smartest/dumbest moves of the week The usually great stuff from my team of insiders: Split on impact of solar flare (although most say not much effect on Campaign '16) and on presidential campaigns (although most still think HRC wins here...
Why would a prominent Nevada union invest $10,000 in an assemblywoman who once suggested unruly union picketers should get a "a bullet in your head" and used her elected position to try to squelch union protests? I wondered about that after Assemblywoman Michele Fiore, not known for her respect for the law or for political foes, filed a revised campaign report after initially showing zero contributions last year, an obvious falsity. Fiore's new report shows about half of her large contributions...
UPDATED, 1/21/16, 10:45 AM:  This list of unknowns, courtesy of PolitiFact's Riley Snyder, is the "highly respected" Latino steering committee. A picture is worth a...media hit, I guess. ---- When Hillary Clinton's campaign came to Nevada in the spring of 2015, when it hired a well-connected Latina to helm her campaign here and when the candidate arrived to get to the left of the president on immigration reform, the message was clear: I own the Latino vote. Later in the year, realizing that he...
The Culinary is officially Switzerland, but like one of those watches, timing is everything. Kurtis Lee of the Los Angeles Times reported (scroll down) Tuesday that the Culinary will not endorse in the Feb. 20 caucus, echoing what Politico's Annie Karni reported a few weeks ago. The union, which also happens to be THE Hispanic turnout machine in the state, has long signaled it would play hard to get this cycle and would probably not endorse before the caucus. The news exactly one month before...
How do you raise $1.8 million in on one year in Nevada if you are a local government official? If you are Steve Sisolak, the Democratic chairman of the Clark County Commission (up this year) and a potential candidate for governor in 2018 (when he would be at midterm), you do this: ►He received 77 contributions of $10,000, accounting for 43 percent of the total, and 107 donations of $5,000, accounting for 30 percent. So three-quarters of his money was big money. There were 530 contributors in...
Donors ponied up about $2.5 million  -- more than $1.1 million dollars for the Senate and $1.3 million for the Assembly -- directly to candidates for the Legislature in 2016 last year, records show. Here's an overview, with links to the reports. SENATE If I were trying to cause trouble, which I would never do, I would point out that neither Becky Harris nor Ben Kieckhefer are up this cycle and that he outraised her 2-to-1. I hear they love each other, are working well together and there's no...
ADDENDUM: The SOS search engine did not pick up a $5,000 contribution to Irene Bustamante Adams because she reported it as "Las Vegas Sand Corp." So it's actually $209,000 and three Democrats. MORE: The SOS search angine also missed a $25,000 contribution to AG Adam Laxalt's PAC. So total now up to $234,000. ---- The Las Vegas Sands, a k a Sheldon Adelson, gave $204,000 in campaign contributions in state and local races in 2015, secretary of state's records show. Just under half ($87,500) went...
It's good to be a monopoly. Of the $147,000 it gave in 2015, NV Energy coughed up $55,000 after the session to legislators and their PACs, according to records on the secretary of state's web site. More to come in 2016. All of the contributions, in reverse chronological order, are listed below. NV Energy 12/31/15 1000.00 Adam Paul Laxalt NVEnergy 12/24/15 10000.00 Nevada Mining Association PAC NV Energy 12/21/15 2500.00 John F Marz NV Energy 12/18/15 500.00 John T Moran Nevada Power Company dba...
WELCOME TO THE WEEKLY REPORT. This week: 1. Exclusive look at numbers in race for state Senate -- voter registration and campaign reports 2. Campaign contribution nuggets/insiders take, too 3. My insiders on the solar flare 4. Smartest/dumbest moves of the week I will have my blog on campaign contributions updated by EOB Monday (I hope earlier), but I have included some nuggets and analysis here that you will see nowhere else. Some of the stuff is pretty incredible, inlcuding early indications...
While the debate roiled this week over rooftop solar and state regulators denying a stay of news rates, a class-action suit was filed alleging a bait and switch by the utility. This was inevitable, I suppose, and is far from the end of this political/legal/public policy battle. You can read it here. Class action complaint against NV Energy 1.12.16.pdf by Jon Ralston
