Good morning, everyone. And Happy New Year. I would love to tell you how happy I am to be back, how much I have missed all of you and how eager I am to report again on the Groundhog Day world of Nevada politics. Yes, I would love to. But here I am, and there you are, and I’m sure I will feel the excitement soon. I returned to find greetings from many candidates – really, nothing says “Happy Holidays” like a breathless pitch for money at year’s end. Heartwarming indeed. The best news about the...
TONIGHT'S RALSTON REPORTS: We'll see.
DAYS UNTIL FILING FOR OFFICE OPENS IN 2014: 73
DAYS UNTIL PRIMARY ELECTION DAY 2014: 172
DAYS UNTIL GENERAL ELECTION DAY 2014: 319
Good morning, everyone. This will be the last Morning Flash for awhile. I’d like to say it’s been a great year in Nevada politics, but that would mean erasing the memory of the 2013 Legislature, where much was promised and little delivered. That doesn’t mean there haven’...
TONIGHT'S RALSTON REPORTS: Former UNLV President Carol Harter.
DAYS UNTIL FILING FOR OFFICE OPENS IN 2014: 74
DAYS UNTIL PRIMARY ELECTION DAY 2014: 173
DAYS UNTIL GENERAL ELECTION DAY 2014: 320
Good morning, everyone. It was fascinating to read and then watch the reaction late Wednesday to this piece by former Reuters DC scribe Sam Youngman. The ultra-personal tale of falling in love and out of love with the Beltway as a journalist was...
Welcome to the Weekly Report.
This week:
1. An in-depth piece on how Nevada got the drone site designation: A Sandoval-Reid production
2. Smartest/dumbest moves of the week

Gov. Brian Sandoval was in a hotel room in Southern California when the call came.
He was about to go to his son’s basketball game as the phone rang on Dec. 30. On the other end of the line was Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx.
“Governor, as you know we’ve been looking at this process (for selecting drone sites.),” Sandoval recalled Foxx saying. “We’ve come down to six. We were very impressed (with Nevada’s application), and we’ve chosen Nevada as one of the sites.”
Sandoval thanked the...
Be skeptical of pundits bearing caveats.
Having said that, here’s mine: Making predictions in January for an entire year, including an election in November, relies on a special combination of lunacy and arrogance. Luckily, I am special.
So, once again, I begin the new year by putting on my oracle’s hat (yes, it looks like Johnny Carson’s Carnac cap) and foretell what is to come. Note, of course, that these predictions are subject to change (another sleazy pundit move) as circumstances do....
Lieutenant governor candidate Sue Lowden, dogged by questions about a $500,000 debt from her 2010 Senate campaign, plans to file a document next week with the Federal Election Commission indicating she is taking care of the obligations.
“This issue will be behind us in the next few weeks,” Lowden told me. “I am looking forward to it being over later this month.”
Lowden has hired an experienced FEC attorney to file the document, in contrast to her past disclosures, which were done by Bob Beers,...
