TONIGHT'S RALSTON REPORTS: We'll see.
DAYS UNTIL GENERAL ELECTION DAY 2014: 8
DAYS UNTIL HARRY REID'S RE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN BEGINS: 9
Good morning, everyone. I write this from my parents’ place in Palo Alto, where I am visiting for less than 24 hours so I could attend the World Series last night with the family. It was a great experience, made greater by being with my father, who had last seen a series game 58 years ago! It was a nice respite from the rush to Election Day,...
Good morning, everyone. My 15 minutes of “Alpha House” fame begin today, dear Flashees. The Amazon Prime show, which is about the lives of four U.S. senators, asked me to play myself in a few scenes, which are now available as Season Two has posted.
”Ralston Reports” is in three episodes, and I am in two (right at the beginning of Episode 10, if you want some flavor). I don’t think there is an Emmy in my future, but I don’t think I embarrassed myself. Going to NYC for two days of shooting was...
TONIGHT'S RALSTON REPORTS: Nastiest judicial race of year: William Horne vs. Carolyn Ellsworth.
DAYS UNTIL GENERAL ELECTION DAY 2014: 12
DAYS UNTIL HARRY REID'S RE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN BEGINS: 13
Good morning, everyone. This NYT story that posted late Wednesday is something else, with Mayor Carolyn Goodman telling the paper of record that the “only reason” she ran after her husband served was to bring pro sports here. Wow.
The other interesting piece that posted late Wednesday was...
Good morning, everyone. Happy anniversary to---me! Thirty years ago today, I started as a night police reporter for the Las Vegas Review-Journal, planning to be in this godforsaken, soulless wasteland for two years on my career arc that would lead me back East to the holy grail of The New York Times. But opportunity kept knocking, I stayed and I have never had a regret about it.
I wrote about my stay here last year at this time. And today that godforsaken, soulless wasteland has become the home...

DAYS UNTIL GENERAL ELECTION DAY 2014: 14
DAYS UNTIL HARRY REID'S RE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN BEGINS: 15
Good morning, everyone. That was quite the debate last night at Congregation Ner Tamid between Erin Bilbray and Rep. Joe Heck, and Laura Myers captured it well. Bilbray kept repeating various mantras about Heck, who kept his cool, even though I thought he might lose it once or twice. We have them Friday on “Ralston Reports.”
State...
Good morning, everyone. I saw “Kill the Messenger” last night and highly recommend it, especially if you are in journalism or interested in journalism or lament the state of journalism. No matter what the facts are – and some remain murky – what happened to him is a sad, depressing story, with a former UNR journalism dean, Jerry Ceppos, at the center of it. (Trivia: I once applied for a job at the Mercury News and got rejected by Ceppos.) Jeremy Renner is superb as is a cast with many high-...
TONIGHT'S RALSTON REPORTS: We will look at judges' races.

DAYS UNTIL HARRY REID'S RE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN BEGINS: 19
Good morning, everyone. In case you don’t know, the jobless rate in Nevada went down again. It’s 7.3 percent, which seems a long way from July 2008, when it was last that low.
Based on those numbers, I am placing the over/under at Gov. Brian Sandoval’s re-election number at 70 percent. Anyone...
Good morning, everyone. Only 13 percent of people in America have a positive view of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. How sad. Such are the findings of the newest NBC-WSJ poll. Thirty-nine percent have a negative view and, shockingly, 30 percent professed not to know who he is. And you know what? I bet he doesn’t care a whit.
Also in that poll, and gloated about on their home turf: The anti-Koch Brothers campaign is a failure. Unless, of course, tits ability to gin up turnout in various...
Good morning, everyone. I know most people reading this are against the margin tax, and I know I’m a broken record on this. But, dear Flashees, what the RJ PAC is doing this cycle arguably is worse than when the publisher-editor-reporter team worked together to try to defeat Harry Reid in 2010. To use its own resources, its own house ads not just to advocate for the initiative’s defeat, but to mislead its readers, intentionally, I believe, is outrageous.
The house ad today is at the bottom of...
Good morning, everyone. I live-tweeted the Hillary Clinton speech last night, so you can see my thoughts on my feed, but let me distill: The $225,000 speech was thoroughly uninspiring – she actually only spoke for 23 minutes, so $10,000 a minute -- with boilerplate rhetoric on higher education and nothing groundbreaking or even that interesting. The half-hour Q and A session with her pal Brian Greenspun allowed her to tell a few Putin and Mandela stories, but nothing you haven’t heard before. I...
