UPDATE, 9:30 AM: Turns out the Washoe GOP really can't help itself. How many shovels does the party have to keep digging this hole deeper? On its Facebook page, the party attacks a college Democrat for speaking out in favor of taxes at this week's Washoe County Commission meeting. "This young man needs to get in the real world of making a living then form his views," the post says. Really? Forget the implication that the kid doesn't have a right to speak up. This is from the same party whose...
UPDATED, 11/15/13 WITH VIDEO VERSION:             "No passion so effectually robs the mind of all its powers of acting and reasoning as fear." ---Edmund Burke On Tuesday evening two concurrent meetings took place in Nevada, one in Las Vegas and one in Reno, that emphasized just how sad the state of political affairs is in the state. In the Washoe County Commission chambers, Kitty Jung couldn’t even get a second for her motion for a small tax increase to repair aging schools that had survived...
Assembly Speaker Marilyn Kirkpatrick informed ex-Assemblyamn Kelly Kite last week that his complaint against the man who replaced him, Jim Wheeler, will not be considered by the Select Committee on Ethics. In the letter, posted here with an analysis from the Legislative Counsel Bureau, Kirkpatrick informs Kite that the panel has no jurisdiction to consider the complaint, which involves Wheeler's residency and financial reporting. The argument essentially is that the secretary of state has...
Proponents of The Education Initiative, a k a the margin tax, will meet Tuesday evening with wary legislative Democrats about the ballot initiative that could drive turnout next year. I'm told the union folks plan to be sober but not threatening, urging the Democrats, some flying to Las Vegas from the North, to get on board because of polling data that indicates it could pass. The Democrats, who have a vacancy in the top race and a couple of female Danish princesses in the lieutenant governor's...
UPDATE, 11/12/13: Attorney Andrew Rempfer says -- and this is the epitomy of irony -- the constable has evaded service. You know, what people usually do to constables trying to serve them! And, according to an email trail he provided, John Bonaventura's lawyer won't be served, either: Mr. Pool: Your comments below are inapposite to your Notice of Appearance, Docket #7. That Notice proves you have implied authority to accept service. In re Focus Media, Inc., 387 F.3d 1077 (9th Cir. 2004). I...
Good morning, everyone. I am sure Erin Cranor is a very nice person. She seems earnest and committed to her job on the Clark County school board. I have no doubt she loves children and wants the district to do better. But she makes me fear for the future of Nevada’s kids. Last night on “Ralston Reports,” Cranor provided only treacly platitudes as we chatted about Nevada’s horrible place on a national report card. Over and over and over again. It was frustrating and frightening (link below). It...
