SolarCity plans referendum to repeal parts of rooftop solar law

Despite the Public Utilities Commission's apparent succumbing to pressure to reconsider grandfathering 17,000 rooftop solar customers, SolarCity will file a referendum Monday to change the existing law, sources confirm.

The referendum will ask voters whether they agree with certain portions of the law (Senate Bill 374), thus either repealing those provisions or locking them in. In essence, the referendum will remove the cap on so-called net metering. repeal the part of the law that allows the PUC to impose different rates on net metering customers and repeal the section that allows the PUC to impose rates that vary by time of day, week, etc.

The company would have to gather 55,000 signatures by June.
