BLOG
This site is retired
When I started The Nevada Independent, I moved this blog onto that site. Please check it out. If you came here looking for old videos of my PBS show, I am sorry they are gone. KNPB and VegasPBS took them off the Internet and tried to extort me to have copies and force me to sign an agreement that I would never put them live on the web. I refused.
Frierson to Chaffetz: I have concerns
A month after the election, House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz, riding one of his longtime hobbyhorses, wrote to Assembly Speaker-in-Waiting Jason Frierson, asking him to expound on his experiences with unfunded mandates to the states from the federal government. I don't think Frierson gave him the answer he was looking for.
Background check advocates urge governor, AG to implement new law
One week after Attorney General Adam Laxalt declared a new background checks law unenforceable, prominent leaders of the campaign to pass the initiative urged Gov. Brian Sandoval to "to urge the speedy and efficient implementation" of the statute.
How Harry Reid, Brian Sandoval, a determined coalition and, yes, Cliven Bundy helped make Gold Butte happen
A year and a half ago, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid persuaded President Obama to set aside 700,000 acres of Nevada land as a national monument.
Thursday potpourri: Sandoval's Butte of a move, Heller's primary avoidance and Fiore's return
Three items of interest on a holiday week Thursday:
PP focus groups, polling send message to Heller, others
It seemed cookie-cutter at the time, but the campaign to use Planned Parenthood defunding against Rep. Joe Heck in the Senate race was remarkably effecive, the group found in post-election polling. The survey found that almost two-thirds of Nevadans found that a convincing reason to vote against Heck. The other parts of the poll also indicate that Nevada, as it has been since 1990 when abortion rights were enshrined in law by a ballot initiative, a solidly pro-choice state.
Trump makes peace with Culinary before inauguration
As well-known supplicants seeking jobs in the new administration traipsed past the watchful eyes of the Fourth Estate at Trump Tower last week, a few less well-known visitors also were going into that now-famous elevator.
Goodbye, Harry
Harry Reid tried to have me fired a few times over the years, once even had my television program briefly canceled. God, I will miss him.
AG to court: Amend your order and allow school choice to move forward
Attorney General Adam Laxalt is asking a judge to amend or revise an order on school choice, insisting it contradicts the Supreme Court's decision that struck down Education Savings Accounts because of the funding mechanism.
Lawyer: Treasurer will face sanction if he continues to press forward with school choice program
A lawyer for plaintiffs in the Nevada school choice case has penned the proverbial strongly worded letter to Attorney General Adam Laxalt, threatening to go to court after the AG's office advsied state Treasurer Dan Schwartz to move forward on Educational Savings Accounts despite an injunction from the state Supreme Court.
