I can see why Sheldon Adelson endorsed Donald Trump

As the New York Times reported, Sheldon Adelson has endorsed Donald Trump for president.

Why? Because they are both Republicans and Trump won "fair and square," as Adelson put it.

But wait: Isn't Israel always paramount in Adelson's mind? Isn't his Jewish faith and his desire to protect Israel what animates much of his activism?

I thought so. But I may have been wrong.

After all, Trump has said a lot of stuff and been supported by a lot of people that might have given Adelson pause. To wit:

►Trump said earlier this year he'll be "neutral" on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. I don't know of anyone, besides his friend Bibi Netanyahu, who is less neutral on that than Sheldon Adelson.

Last year, Trump used hoary Jewish stereotypes in a speech to the Republican Jewish Coalition, a group partly funded by Adelson and that also has endorsed Trump.

Trump has repeatedly used his Twitter account to send to his millions of followers tweets put out by neo-Nazi groups

Trump apparently couldn't come up with an answer on how his Muslim registry would differ from Jews having to register in Nazi Germany.

Most recently, Trump refused to disavow his anti-Semitic supporters who left ugly messages for a well-respected reporter, Julia Ioffe, who profiled his wife.

There's more, of course, including Trump's refusal to disavow David Duke, the former KKK leader, and his neo-Nazi fan club. And there are still six months to go in the election.

Then again, Trump is the last Republican standing, he was once a grand marshal in a Salute to Israel parade and he has a Jewish son-in-law. And, of course, he's not Hillary Clinton.

Not to worry, Mr. Adelson. Trump seems just the guy to Make Israel Great Again.
