Eight Assembly Republicans were notified Wednesday that their voices were heard on wiretaps in an ongoing probe focused on GOP consultant Tony Dane, multiple sources confirmed.
None of the octet is currently targeted in the investigation, which began after Assemblyman Chris Edwards told police he believed he was the victim of an extortion plot. Dane has had his offices searched and files and equipment confiscated by authorities.
The Republicans who received the letters, Wednesday, a police source said, were: Jill Dickman, John Ellison, Michele Fiore, John Moore, Victoria Seaman, Shelly Shelton, Brent Jones and Edwards.
I'm told none of the initial evidence collected by authorities implicates any of the elected officials in a crime. But by law, the police must inform someone if his or her voice is heard on a wiretapped conversation.
But I bet it is unpleasant to receive such a letter.
Others, including campaign hacks advising some of the members of the GOP Ass. Caucus, also received the letters, sources said. But for now, Dane remains the main focus of the probe.
Dane also is under investigation by the SOS and AG, but no action has been taken despite the government's obvious skepticism of Dane's defense that he was not a conduit for contributions from clients to a PAC he started.
