Clinton to call for path to citizenship

UPDATE: Astrid Silva, the now-nationally known DREAMer, will moderate today's roundtable.

Hillary Clinton will call in Las Vegas for "fixing our broken immigration system by passing comprehensive immigration reform that provides a path to citizenship," according to a campaign official.

The development was first reported by Maggie Haberman of The New York Times.

Using famliar rhetoric, the campaign official talked about the 'rule of law' and border security but emphasized Clinton "will say that the standard for a true solution is nothing less than a full and equal path to citizenship. She will say that we cannot settle for proposals that provide hard-working people with merely a 'second-class" status.'"

Clinton will make the remarks at Rancho High School, which is 70 percent Hispanic and where nearly two-thirds of the students are on a poverty program called Free and Reduced Lunch.

This is not exactly an unexpected development but shows Clinton making an early move to stake out the Hispanic vote, which optimistic Democrats think could make up 20 percent of the Nevada electorate in November 2016.

So who will be the first GOP contender to label what she says Tuesday in Las Vegas as "amnesty"? My money is on Ted Cruz.

The RNC also tried to puncture Clinton's Vegas visit by reminding the media about her inconsistent record on illegal immigration, inlcuding her shifting positions on driver's licenses for undocumented aliens. In Nevada, a measure passed in 2013 allows illegal immigrants to possess driver's authorization cards.

Rancho High School has quite the history in recent Nevada politics. Barack Obama appeared there in January 2008, and Senate hopeful Sharron Angle made her infamous "some of you look a little more Asian to me" in October 2010.

When your school has the right demographics, the politicians will be magnetized....
