After being very active during Campaign '12, the Nevada chapter of Americans for Prosperity has sent out a missive signaling it will pressure Gov. Brian Sandoval and the Gang of 63 to abolish the Modified Business Tax. The group also expressed its displeasure with the governor's decision to expand Medicaid:
Another platform explored in the Governor’s “State of the State” is the Medicaid expansion. AFP-NV does not support Governor Sandoval’s Medicaid expansion and believe he’s falling for another too-good-to-be-true federal promise. As such, we will hold him accountable to his pledge of opting out of Medicaid expansion if and when federal promises of funding for the expansion decrease. The Medicaid expansion in itself is costly to Nevadans, and we hope the Governor will take the best interests of Nevada taxpayers into account and monitor this decision closely.

We’ve been busy fighting for freedom-- by engaging the Southern Nevada Water Authority for raising water rates on Nevadans, by taking on union protesters across Nevada, and by holding politicians like Shelley Berkley accountable for reckless policies.
2012 may be gone, but we are still here! AFP-NV and our 43,000 activists are soldiering on to keep fighting for the issues that affect us all. With economic freedom in our forecast, AFP-NV is looking to the future, the 2013 Legislative Session.
As Mark Twain expressed, “No man's life, liberty, or property are safe while the legislature is in session.” During the 2013 Nevada Legislative Session, AFP-NV is committed to ensure the maximum preservation of YOUR freedoms, the most effective use of YOUR tax dollars, and the enhancement of YOUR liberties by promoting policies that embody economic freedom and fiscal responsibility.
In his informal kick-off to the 2013 Nevada Legislative Session, the “State of the State,” Governor Brian Sandoval pledged to Nevadans not to support higher taxes on employers. Though the extension of the sunset taxes are not ideal, the Governor did allow for some tax relief.
AFP-NV strongly supports Governor Sandoval’s efforts to cut Nevada’s onerous “Modified Business Tax (MBT),” exempting an additional 2,700 businesses from this dreaded, job-killing tax, and giving a $25 million injection to the Nevada economy as we recover from the scourges of the Great Recession. The day after the “State of the State,” Governor Sandoval was on political pundit Jon Ralston’s show ‘Ralston Reports’ where he said,
“Ultimately, of course, we would like to eliminate it (MBT) for all businesses.”
AFP-NV is strongly encouraged by the Governor’s words and we challenge the Governor and the Nevada Legislature to put in place a process that would ultimately eliminate this tax. We at AFP-NV recognize the tax won’t be removed immediately, but with triggers in place, businesses both small and large will have a sense of encouragement to expand and invest. This is smart economic policy which will continue to assist in Nevada’s recovery.
